From selling everything we owned to traveling the world, I searched for joy everywhere — until I learned it had to start inside me. Your search for joy can start inside of you as well.
My Journey to Joyful Reinvention: From Burnout to a Burning Bright Flame
A Flicker Fading
I’ve been busy, busy these past few months both in my work and deep in my heart. Today, I want to invite you into my personal story of joyful reinvention. Because if you’re feeling overwhelmed or worn down, I want you to know you’re not alone, and change is always possible, one brave step at a time.
There was a season when my days were full of giving: homeschooling six kids, hosting dinners and parties, and running from one activity to the next.
I poured so much of myself into creating opportunities to connect – planning gatherings, inviting families over, and trying to build the close friendships I longed for. While others bonded and celebrated at my events, I often went to bed feeling exhausted and lonelier than ever. I kept telling myself to bloom where I was planted, but the truth was I was withering. My light was fading, and I started to believe that exhaustion and sadness were just part of who I was.
Then, one simple moment changed everything. We were delivering a meal to a family who had just moved in and had a new baby. As we stood on their doorstep, I found myself chatting cheerfully and easily with the husband, introducing myself and welcoming them. On the way back to the car, my husband turned to me and said softly, “That’s the Maria I know.”
His words caught me off guard. I asked what he meant, and he replied, “That’s who you really are – bubbly, cheerful, welcoming.” It hit me like a wave: I had forgotten who I was.
This blog is the story of that change: the moments that shaped it, the courage it took, and three lessons I hope will inspire you on your own path.
That Time We Let It All Go
One of the biggest turning points in my reinvention came when we decided to sell our home (and our belongings!) without a plan. After years of trying to “just keep going,” I realized staying put was slowly draining me. My husband and I took long walks, dreaming of something new. What started as a silly thought, “What if we sold everything and just…left?” grew into a feeling we couldn’t ignore.
In a whirlwind, we got our house ready to list (including having our ceilings painted by a man named Michael Angelo – true story!) and it sold in just three days! We sold at the peak of the housing market, which gave us the freedom and finances to do something different. Our schedules were finally open, so we turned this opportunity into a “gap year” for our family, traveling to three continents and experiencing adventures we’d before only dreamed of.
Lesson 1: Have The Courage to Choose Change
You don’t have to make a giant leap, but you do need to be brave enough to take intentional steps toward the life you want. Change begins with deciding you’re capable of creating something different and having the courage to take the first step.
Finding New Life in the… Desert?
After our gap year, we eventually settled in the desert — a place I never expected to live or to love, but one that surprisingly helped us start to thrive. My kids quickly found activities and friends, and for the first time in years, I felt surrounded by the support I’d been craving. Life was good in many ways. But underneath, I still felt off.
Despite all the amazing experiences we’d had, I couldn’t shake a sense of sadness, anxiety, and overwhelm.
I thought changing my circumstances would “fix” everything, but I found myself slipping back into old patterns. That realization was heartbreaking: I worried maybe this was just who I was destined to be.
Then, during my Master Coach certification, I dove deeper into understanding emotional processing and nervous system regulation. As I began to apply these tools, I saw even more how everything in my life was connected: my relationships, mindset, and overall well-being. I realized that when one part of my life felt out of balance, it rippled into everything else, and that true change meant caring for the whole person, not just one piece. Learning to slow down, listen to myself, and nurture all parts of my life has been transformational.
As I began doing the inner work, everything started to shift. I wasn’t magically happy all the time, but I finally understood how to attend to myself with compassion, and how to create calm even in chaos.
Lesson 2: Lasting Change Starts From the Inside Out
Changing your circumstances can be good, even necessary, but lasting change begins from the inside out. If you don’t do the inner work, you’ll eventually find yourself back in the same place mentally and emotionally, no matter where you go or what you achieve.
From Flicker Back to Flame
As I continued doing the inner work – learning to slow down, process my emotions, and nurture myself — something beautiful happened: my light began to shift from a faint flicker back into a steady, glowing flame. I felt moments of real joy, energy, and connection — not just fleeting happiness, but deep, anchored peace. I started to believe I wasn’t broken or destined to stay stuck. I began to trust that I could find my way back when life knocked me down.
The tools I gained: emotional processing, nervous system regulation, and mindset shifts, didn’t make life perfect or erase hard days. But they gave me a roadmap: when I felt lost, I knew how to come home to myself with more ease. I didn’t stay off track as long, and I could meet my struggles with greater kindness and strength.
That’s what I want for every mom I work with: to know that joyful reinvention isn’t about achieving a permanent state of bliss or fixing yourself forever. It’s about having tools that help you navigate the ups and downs of life so you can keep your light burning brightly – and return to your joy – again and again.
Lesson 3: Reinvention is a journey, not a destination.
Having tools doesn’t mean life will never challenge you; it means when your light dims, you’ll know how to reignite your flame and find your way back home with more ease, confidence, and self-compassion.
Your Joyful Reinvention Awaits
My own journey from feeling lost and burned out to reigniting my light has shown me just how powerful it is to heal from the inside out. I know what it’s like to feel stuck, exhausted, and unsure of how to find your way back to yourself, and I know how life-changing it can be to finally feel whole, calm, and joyful again.
This is my passion: to walk alongside other moms who are ready for something different, and to guide you with compassion, experience, and the tools I’ve gained through both my training and personal transformation. You don’t have to figure this out alone.
